Underwriter - Commercial Lines

Position Description:
  • Accountable for producing business in assigned programs. Generate production at a level of established personal goals.
  • Underwrite new and renewal business based on underwriting authority and adherence to State and company rules and regulations regarding the preparation and distribution of insurance contracts. Apply appropriate quality underwriting and risk selection on the business quoted. Maintain quality of end product verifying prepared documents follow established procedures. Have knowledge of or perform computer data entry, as needed. Monitor critical areas, such as loss ratio, costs, retention ratio and new business hit ratio, formulating corrective action where necessary. Work closely with management to ensure smooth running program.
  • Maintain positive job attitude and good working relationships with co-workers and supervisor. Work to achieve an understanding of classes of business written within the company. Responsible for mentoring and training of Assistant Underwriters.
  • Interprets, implements and enforces company policies under the direction of the Director. Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Associates degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school or related experience or training equivalent in the insurance industry. Undertakes self-development activities including obtaining industry designations and attending industry-related seminars and training for continuing education.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, company underwriting manuals, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public. Must be a detail-oriented service professional with a high level of accuracy.

Must possess good math skills and knowledge of commercial lines rating. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, commissions, percentages, etc.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Ability to learn and use company computer systems. A working knowledge of windows is necessary. Also the ability to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. is a plus.

Strong organizational skills necessary. Ability to function under pressure, prioritize work and respond quickly to new demands. Must be able to work independently yet function as part of a team. Professional in approach and self motivated to improve education and performance. Understanding of contracts and markets.
